Xiaoye Sun

“In the field of art, there are no so-called correct data to reference to, and both the process and results are open-ended.” This is Xiaoye Sun’s philosophy toward art that also underlines his belief and persistence in sculpture. His works express his understanding of the world, love, the human race and the self.

Xiaoye Sun, born in Beijing China in 1979, studied at the Saint-Petersburg Repin State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Russia during 1998 to 2004, and obtained his Master’s Degree in Sculpture from there. His work entitled “The Fallen Crane” entered the competition to be the centerpiece of the lounge in the St. Petersburg Concert Hall. He has signed with Shanghai Sundial Media since 2004. In 2005, he created “Sailing” and “Golden Wings” as city sculptures for Shanghai. In 2007, he had his personal sculpture show in his gallery in the Beijing 798 Art Zone. In 2009, he created an exhibition hall named “Sculpture Master.” Since 2010, he has been employed as an artist by the Jiangsu Wuxi Modern Art Research Institute, and his works have been on display in the Changshu Museum and the Dachun Art Gallery in the Beijing 798 Art Zone. His works are currently on display in the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center.

Xiaoye displayed a strong desire and love for art at a young age, and exhibited great artistic creativity. He could see familiar shapes in almost every piece of cloud in the sky. He showed strong abilities in 3D visualization and drawing artistic inspirations even when he was very young. At the age of five or six, he already fell in love with clay sculptures. He made with clay the heads of a human and a goat in elementary school, which were considered as good as college works by an old professor who participated in the designing and sculpting of the Monument to the People's Heroes at Tian'anmen Square in Beijing.

At the end of 2007, Xiaoye opened his personal sculpture gallery in the Beijing 798 Art Zone, to record and commemorate the path he has taken in art, and to showcase his thinking about life and lives. His work “Cat” shows cats in an invisible space and the process of their exploration, struggle and submission. “Sunbathing,” on the other hand, is about a woman showering in the sunshine and enjoying the nature in a most primitive state. The woman’s hands in this work were created as relief enabling the whole piece to resemble the nature itself, and heightening the harmonious state between human and nature in an ideal world.

Xiaoye’s outstanding artistic sensibility and creativity originates from his thinking and reflections about life. To search for the essence of the art of sculpture, he studied many books on philosophy to draw themes from there for his sculptures. Artistic inspirations and ideas that come through diligence and hard work are sure to transform into amazing works of art through the hands of Xiaoye.
